Zizek had a nice riff in a recent New Left Review article, arguing that
racism today is sustained by hypocrisy & silence; the truly up-to-date
racist scorns explicitly racist speech and speaks only in code, if at all.
To speak of it openly is to threaten the social order. He argued, if I'm
remembering this right, that it was like homosexuality in the military -
because the military is a homosocial institution is precisely the reason
same-sexers in uniform are so taboo.
