I am not a Marxist, but I will attempt to state my view of
Curley's discussion about who is worse off: the capitalist or the
communist. With the fall of communism and the poverty the Russian
people now find themselves in, I too am reminded of the terrible
years during the Great Depression here in the United States. From my
understanding of the differences between capitalism and Marxism, what
I personally view is that capitalism over the past 200 years of U.S.
history has worked, while Marxist theory has been put into use in the
Soviet Union and ultimately failed. The "greater good" of society,
namely the few governmental officials in power, saw the good of
society to be themselves. Capitalism works because it works for the
greater good not only of the person themselves, but society also
benefits from the success of the individual. Maybe that is an
extremely positive or unrealistic attitude, but I think there is a
lot more to capitalism than just what Marx' view holds.
