I do not think that anyone can escape the number of stores that are selling the American flag, and the number of stickers, T-shirts, and so forth that have flooded the market. I think it is great that we have a renewed sense of patriotism in this country. However it is only after the terrorist attacks on September 11th that the capitalist has sought to exploit the situation for his own benefit. The proceeds that are gained from this new found patriotism, are enriching a select few, at the expense of the many who perished defending this symbol of liberty. It is sadly ironic that a profit can be made of a symbol freedom, that belongs to all citizens of the United States. The act of appealing to our sense of patriotism to make a profit is indicative of the marketing that follows any event that can be seen to generate profit for those who wish to exploit the situation. I know that this is our constitutional right to behave is such a manner, but I think that it is indicative of the ethical deprivation inherent in so many businesses today. --- from list marxism-intro-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
