The question of health causing wealth or the other way
around is not a logical connection. The original
statement was probably intended to mean that, "Those
that are consistently ill are unable to be as
productive in pursuing material gains or even attain a
substistence level of existence." This quote would be
agreeable in that those who are ill chronically or
otherwise are often reliant on close relations to make
up the deficit in their production. This forms a case
for employer health benefits and government control of
medicine.
Nevertheless, one must also consider the fact that
many of the ways in which people obtain wealth in
developed society are not the most health concious of
life-styles. Working so many hours a week in a
hazardous environment around large equipment, while
maintaining a fast food diet is not healthy in any
sense. Thus, I must also take Phlen position in
saying that a certain level of wealth must be attained
in society to escape the deleterious effects of the
pursuit of wealth.
On a side note, please take inot account that the life
style of indigenous peoples across the world can be in
fact very healthy without a great amount of capital
wealth. Living in a developed nation means also that
you can recognize that there are flaws in any system,
including the one you participate in.
