I can't believe with all of the discussion on the electoral college how most everybody seems to be so passionate against it, yet everybody has ignored the opposing view and engaged in some serious "groupthink." The electoral vote actually empowers people. I have not yet seen anyone respond to my reference to the article originally published in Discover Magazine called "Math Against Tyrrany." I just did a search on google and found a link to my previous entry: http://archives.econ.utah.edu/archives/marxism-intro/2004m10/msg00106.htm also see: http://www.avagara.com/e_c/reference/00012001.htm There is another article, a local one in the Deseret News by Jay Evensen. One of his points is that getting rid of the electoral college would cause other problems. For example, in many cases it would empower a third party candidate to get enough votes such that no one candidate would have a sufficient percentage to win and the voting would be determined by Congress, making each individual's vote count for even less.
