Subject: M-INTRO: M-Intro: Smoking and McDonalds

Idasan and Jeffkang21 have very interesting and valid points on this subject. Obviously, if people didn't want McDonals'd unhealthy food the company would not have survived as long as they have, a basic supply/demand principle. Idasan claims that Mcdonald's has a social responsibility to make a "safe product."
I think that as a capitalist society we have a great opportunity, and that is "choice." Everyone knows that smoking CAN kill you. Everyone knows that an unhealthy diet CAN kill you. The great part is that you choose whether to eat unhealthy or to smoke.
I think the part where "social responsibility" comes in is for these companies to inform their customers of the hazards of their product. What drives this "social responsibility" is money. If these companies don't inform people of these hazards i.e." a diet high in fat can be hazardous to your health" they will face huge lawsuits, as cig companies have.
This way they can still make their billions and at the same time have some sort of "social responsibility" by saying, "it's on the label." McDonald's is not going to stop selling the Big Mac because it's unhealthy (their top selling burger), but they will give you a nutritional breakdown while you are eating it.
