I recently read an article in the NY Times, discussing the concern with
social position influencing Western civilization. The article mentions that
Western history was first buoyed by Christianity and later by Marxism. The
poor enjoyed a moral status of their social rank as low, while the rich
pursued pleasures of sin and corruption. It was the spread of capitalism in
the 19th and 20th centuries that interrupted this arrangement. Money
influenced status anxiety. The rich were not only wealthier, but better.
Low status seemed to be deserved.

The article mentions religion as being status anxiety’s most effective
antidote. Christianity emphasizes that we are all like everyone else, that
through mortality the vanity of earthy pursuits are left on earth.

Curiosity overtook me upon reading this article. What does Karl Marx have
to say about a society that is completely influenced by Christianity?
