In response to lancer "America is what it is, simply the best and it is unfortunate that people within the country take cheap shots at it. A question for all of those who complain and cry foul: If you lived in China, Nigeria, or Pakistan would you be so bold?" Is criticism a cheap shot then? Personally I believe criticism to be constructive and a vital part of the democratic process. It amazes me that some people have such little toleration for it. Of course you chose countries that fall short of any industrialized nation. Most critics within the US would not claim that China, Nigeria, or Pakistan were superior to the US, yet you use this example. Why is it that you didn't compare the US to more modern democratic nations? This seems like sort of a straw man argument to me. Even if I were to buy your argument that the US is the best nation in the world, that wouldn't mean our nation would be perfect and problem free or that something better could not yet be realized. For these reasons alone criticism should be welcome. Tactics such as yours show an unwillingness to engage in real discussion. Instead of a serious response, you simply refer to criticism as complaining or "cheap shots". --- from list marxism-intro-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
