I have to advocate for my own belief about a branch of socialism I had not heard
about untill last year and that is Market Socialism. In this sort of socialism
markets are embraced while at the same time the workers own the means of
production. The way this is done is that individual firms are all worker
owned, the capitalist has been eliminated. Each firm is democratic in setting
wages for differing positions of responsiblity so this sort of socialism
include the rewarding of individual responsiblity, mentioned by BillyB, by the
granting of higher pay and better positions to those who earn them.

This system can be visualized and believed much more than some utopia system
where everyone earns the same wage and has all their wants taken care of by the
benevolent system. There will be competition between firms and competition
over the best jobs, but the capitalist who provides no real service to society
would be removed and the profits of a company would acrue to the workers who
created them. Think of all the companies who implement profit sharing in order
to increase employee productivity, and then imagine all workers getting back
exactly the labor they had contributed.

For an excellent guide to how such a system would work I would suggest David
Schweickhart's work, in particular 'Against Capitalism'.
