Actually, the people I know who are "going in that direction" are pretty sure
they'll make a lot of money (meaning gross revenue), but they are also
expecting to have very high costs for malpractice insurance and other items. 
Those who are looking at it realistically are unsure as to whether they will
really "make" alot of money (profit after revenue minus costs).  There are a
lot of other careers to go into with better odds of cashing in than in the
medical profession right now.  Based on this factor, it would only be natural
for most of the people aspiring to be doctors to have chosen that career
because of factors other than money such as personal interest, satisfaction of
helping people, or perhaps because doctors are generally esteemed highly by
society/social status).
