Really good questions ChuckB and yes indeed there are people who care and try to get the
word out about poverty issues in addition to support direct services for the poor.

In Utah, one such group is Utah Issues. I am including two recent reports they have
posted. The first is called, "The State of Working Utah"

The other is some updated poverty statistics.

For Pike who just asked about poverty statistics over time, the census bureau has good
current and past year stats. Unfortunately they do no paint a very good picture.

They can be found at:

According to the latest Census Bureau report, 35.9 million Americans lived in
poverty in 2003, the third consecutive year the figure has increased. Of this
total, 15.3 million lived in extreme poverty--meaning they subsisted on less
than half the official poverty line of $18,810 for a family of four. The number
of Americans in the latter category has grown by 3 million since Bush took
office. It is the highest level since the Census Bureau began collecting such
data three decades ago.

What the hell is bush doing to stop this? What can we do to stop this? Does
anyone care?
