One of the options for the False Creek Model Sustainable Village would be
use of the site to develop a commune and beyond that as a decanting centre
for other communes at more remote locations in B.C. People's Voice,
Sept./97 has a front page story from the Central Executive Committee,
Communist Party of Canada. It says "...the employers and their government
have not let up their offensive one bit." True. This is a pseudo-democracy
at best. It is mostly a plutocracy and all indications so far are that the
plutocrats who employ Mayor Owen and Council will try to keep fire away
from mortals as False Creek is developed.
What good is communism without communes? I never hear of any in B.C.
Vancouver Public Library has two videos on successful Chinese Communes,
one urban and one rural. Each has a population in the low thousands. False
Creek is being planned for 5,000 on 80 acres. The urban commune could be a
decanting centre for a rural commune. Moreover, less closely knit
co-operative societies and worker-owned industrial complexes could also
decant from False Creek.
Just a thought. The project will turn into what people want it to be if
they get organized enough. The next public meeting is in a month. Email
<mark_holland-AT-city.vancouver.bc.ca> to get on the email mailing list and
be apprised of future meetings.
