     At least six people were killed over the weekend in violence
the Peruvian army blamed on presumed Shining Path rebels, a
military spokesman said Monday. 

     Three of the guerrillas and a soldier were killed in the
confrontation between a military patrol and a rebel unit near
Tingo Maria, about 560 kilometers (900 miles) northeast of Lima
in Huanuco department early Sunday. 

     The spokesman said the rebels attacked the army troops in a
wooded area. 

     Two farmers taking part in a civilian paramilitary operation
were killed late Friday in a town outside Tingo Maria, apparently
by the same rebel column, the army spokesman said.
