Date: Mon, 01 Dec 1997 16:17:35 +0200 Subject: M-NEWS: english summary Murros, issue 9 (5/97) ENGLISH SUMMARY page 2, THE EDITORIAL. In our editorial we handle the Left League's member poll on EMU and the views of Esko Sepp{nen, a Finnish MEP who is also the black horse of the Left League party. Is he a rainmaker or a reformist? THE EDITORIAL IS TRANSLATED IN ENGLISH - see our web site or inquire for it! page 3, A VIEW ON A WORKER'S EVERYDAY LIFE. Katja Tuominen gives this view on the Finnish worker's everyday life in the 80th anniversary of independence and the "divide-and-rule" tactics of the grand capital. She writes that the true nature of capitalism and it's exploitation structures must be exposed for the working class to shed it's internal disagreements and start fighting together. THIS ARTICLE IS TRANSLATED IN ENGLISH - see our web site or inquire for it! page 4, ALGERIA'S WAY TO BARBARY. In this translation from the "Sosialistisk Arbeideravis" Chris Harman writes about Algeria's gradual slipping into violence and barbary, and how the leftist movements' inconsideration paved way for the barbary imposed by fundamentalist islamic movements. page 5, THE HOMELAND. A view on Finland. Janne Selin's "Finland isn't signing the landmine ban", Juhani Lohikoski tells about the civil movement to oppose the founding of an Islamic School in Helsinki, and news about the squat in Turku which has been taken over by activists on the route of a motorway construction project. pages 6-9, CHIAPAS. In his very detailed and informative article, Juha Lievonen goes to the bottom of the native organisation, the difficulties in the democracy of Zapatista societies, and the social and moral revolution in Chiapas. He questions the unconditional praise of the Zapatista by western left movements, throwing light on the black sides of Zapatista ideas of democracy, and their inability to produce economical results. page 10, THE "FOX-GIRLS". Criticism of the new Finnish TV film, "The Fox-girls". Young animal rights activists that carry out assaults in fur farms, letting the foxes free, dying their fur with henna (to decrease the value of the fur), destroying breed-control cards, and also assault furware shops and auctions, are called "Fox-girls". But Misha Sallinger criticises this movie for it's naivety and partiality in favour of the farm owners. page 11, CIVIL SERVICE. "Lose your virginity in the Civil Service", is the headline of this article where Misha Dellinger writes about the good and bad sides of the Finnish Civil Service system (a form of conscription, alternative to the Armed Service -tn), emphasising the need for a separate "Civvie" organisation, and flashes a vision of a general Civil Conscript strike to crush the whole conscription system. page 12, THE ABC OF MARXISM. The first article of this Murros' series, "Women's Emancipation" is translated from a book by John Molyneux, and gives a view of how a socialist revolution could liberate women completely, and also the position of gays and lesbians. page 13, THE ELECTIONS IN POLAND. The trade union Solidarity won the elections in Poland, but today's solidarity, consisting of almost 40 little rightist parties, is only a shadow of the Solidarity of 1981. This is shown in e.g. the repulsive rightist, religionist rhetoric of their leader. page 14, CELEBRATED PERSONALITIES. Victor Jara - songs of the problems and dreams of Latin America. This article by Juhani Lohikoski tells Jara's story and his position in the rise and fall of the Unidad Popular. Celebrated Personalities is a Murros series which presents prominent persons of the left, and back issues include Ulrike Meinhof, Rosa Luxemburg, Mao Ze-Dong and Lev Trotsky. page 17, MISS TORNADO. Murros' columnist Miss Tornado writes ironically about democracy in Finland - the "democracy" of EU, EMU, CBE... page 18, CULTURE. Another translation from the Sosialistisk Arbeideravis, giving a brief biography of the Italian playwriter-director Dario Fo, and congratulating him on his nobel prize. "Che Once More", Katja Tuominen's critic of Che's Motorcycle Diary. page 20, THE COMMUNIST YOUTH OF FINLAND. "Democratic twisting of hands and tough discussions", main issue in the column on the Communist Youth of Finland is this time the 2nd Annual Autumn Meeting of the CYF, which was held in 4th October in Jyv{skyl{, central Finland. (A more detailed account of it in english can be found in our International Bulletin 3/97 -tn) page 21, MURROS READERS' TRIP -97 & THIS IS WHAT WE THINK. An account by Juhani Lohikoski of the Murros Readers' Trip, this time it was a cruise Helsinki-Tallinn-Helsinki. These trips are not plain partying but also have a working group system - this time there were groups on advertising and circulation and on outlook and inclusion. The "This Is What We Think" platform, included in every issue. page 22, INSIDE THE SYSTEM & READERS. Inside the system is a column of Murros where we expose the follies of the system. Jiang Zemin, president of China, visited USA; a TV program about breeding test animals; Religion sells well; Labour's U-turn on tobacco; and the bourgeois Ben Zyskowicz has bright ideas again. THIS ARTICLE IS TRANSLATED IN ENGLISH - see our web site or inquire for it! page 23, FUTURE ACTIONS. As always, the last page is exclusively for the future actions of the Communist Youth of Finland. ------------------------------------------------------------------- KOMMUNISTINUORET - COMMUNIST YOUTH OF FINLAND Nuorten oikeuksien puolesta - kapitalismia vastaan PL 288, 00171 Helsinki, Finland Puh: 358-9-278 2244 E-mail: komnuor-AT-dlc.fi Internet: http://www.dlc.fi/~komnuor/ --------------------------------------------------------------------
