Peebles" <cmp8q-AT-faraday.clas.Virginia.EDU> Subject: Re: M-PSY: women and mental health Sounds intriguing -- of course first one asks oneself, what does the group mean by "progress in general"? (And also by self-esteem for that matter.) Still, I imagine the data being collected would be of great interest and value. Chris, will your reference to the APC take me to wherever you found this information (on the web?, no?)? If not, references would be appreciated. Lots of thoughts rush in at the mention of such a topic: how does one measure someone's "self-esteem," and based on what model of the self and upon what definition of esteem? But I also imagine strange encounters: women in "unprogressive" countries, countries "without a lot of progress in general??" with quite a firm grasp on their identities, place, selves, roles in "traditional" society. And women in "progress" countries, bitterly negotiating the line between the "progress" which is at once demanded and prohibited, feeling something less than esteem for the women they seem to be despite all steps taken, and something more than (other than?) respect for the men they (we?) become in the process. This is going a bit far, but, as I said the idea of looking into "women's" "self-esteem" in relation to ("men's"?) "progress" is really quite intriguing, even if the particular study doesn't turn out to approach the question in a self-reflective way. --Catherine Peebles On Mon, 18 Nov 1996, Chris Burford wrote: > With reference to Brenda's posts, I see on the > APC (Association for Progressive Communications - includes > IGC, PGC and GreenNet) networks, a copyright article > about Peru which alludes to the implementation in that > country of an initiative by > > the World Federation for Mental Health which is focussing its > world-wide activities on women's self-esteem and its relation to > progress in general in individual countries. > > > Does anyone have more information?
