Subject: M-TH: Sraffa and Steedman

I see I am subscribed to marxism-thaxis, presumably as
a rather quiet former member of M2. I wish the new
list well. I think Jukka and Chris S will make interesting
moderators. In particular, I hope Chris S will remind us
>from time to time, of Marx's respect for
Aristotle.

Just a comment on Steedman. I thought it was established on
the original marxism list, in one of its better moments,
that Sraffa by no means wrote with the intention of
critically altering the main direction of Marx's analysis.

Steedman's cleverly titled book "Marx after Sraffa" (unobtainable
now unfortunately in England) implies that a qualitative
change has occurred. Its detailed analysis has commanded
respect, and presented some difficulty to people who would wish
to refute it. But if read carefully the work starts with
15 or 20 prior assumptions, of a non-dynamic nature, which
are highly likely to determine the conclusions.

Steedman's work may be in the scientific idiom but like
all science, its perspective, and hidden prejudices are open
to question. Especially IMHO, that the law of value
has been definitely refuted. But I am no economist, nor
mathematician.
