You mean the line about judging a book by its cover?

In an international forum, the particular meaning of expressions is often
hard to determine and open to misinterpretations [that's one of the
reasons some people feel that they have to telegraph their intentions with
"smiley faces"]. Surely, that is elementary.

I didn't realize that we were engaged in the "very stuff of propaganda." I
thought we were communicating to each other on an Internet mailing list.
