Freedom in what context, Scott?

If your interested in Marxology, then check-out an essay on "Socialism
and ethics" by the founder of Marxology, Maximilien Rubel (Ch. 2 in
Joseph O'Malley and Keith Algozin ed. _Rubel on Karl Marx: Five Essays_,
Cambridge University Press, 1981). Perhaps Paul Thomas's _Karl Marx and
the Anarchists_ (London, Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1980) might be of some
use as well.
