Date: Mon, 20 Jan 1997 08:59:34 -0800 (PST) From: Scott McLemee <mclemee-AT-igc.apc.org> Subject: M-TH: Henwood & exploitation As someone with a little experience with the left press, I've got to say that Doug Henwood's LEFT BUSINESS OBSERVER pays as badly as anyone, from the figure he named a couple years ago when I was thinking of trying to write for it. So what? Does Jerry Levy think Henwood's relationship with his writers is one of alienated value-production? He pays for shit for the same reason every other left magazine does. Except the ones that don't pay at all. Nobody in his or her right mind goes into this kind of work to make a buck. And the notion that LBO has much "capital" beyond DH's perseverance is symptomatic at best, demagogic at worst. But I have an idea. Jerry Levy should go rob a bank or two, set up a magazine, and create a genuine community of freely associated laborers. Is suggesting this gangsterism? No more than is indicating that somebody deserves to be knee-capped with a shotgun. --- from list marxism-thaxis-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
