Usually I see these and just ignore, but tonight, for some reason, I can't
resist. Why does it seem to me that in these exchanges I'm hearing only
part of a conversation? I think because there seem to be behind them a
history of personal animosity that seems to stem from somewhere before and
beyond this list. Though it has seemed to me also that everyone who has
participated has, in fact, real personal and intellectual stakes in the
topics that might be discussed on a list like this one, in the sort of
exchanges we've been witnessing of late, it appears to me that the
personal issues are emerging thinly veiled in a lexicon of epithets drawn
>from the, again, real personal and intellectual issues that seem like the
proper substance for posts to the list. I don't actually care too much
about this right now (though it is cluttering up my mailbox and if I
remembered how to unsubscribe I would have by now) but if this seemingly
purely personal namecalling (it would insult my children to call it
childish) is what passes for political and intellectual discussion,
debate, and polemic surrounding marxism on this list, then no wonder it is
a relatively isolated and insignificant political practice and
intellectual discourse in this country today.
