the fact of the matter is that "white" workers in the Americas have
systematically denied blacks employment through unions, harassment and
savage violence since the antebellum period. this dynamic
cannot be denied. as an african, (from africa), working as a journalist in
the united states, i can testify from personal experience that white
people almost automatically oppose the advancement of blacks in the
workplace. as one colleague, a senior white editor in a major newspaper, 
put it, "something evil seems to get into white people's minds" when 
they see a black advancing in the workplace. this envy and hatred cannot
be swept under the carpet. indeed, it is the reason why american workers
have never developed a "class" consciousness. instead white workers
have articulated themselves to a racism that transcends class.
