It is my understanding that Paul De Man was of Belgian rather than Dutch origin. I know that he was the nephew of the Belgian Socialist politician and theorist Henri De Man, who after WW I achieved some prominence as a critic of the Marxism of the Second International on the grounds that it ignored 'spiritual' factors. His arguments were I understand not unlike those of Georges Sorel. During WW II when Begium fell under the Germans Henri De Man emerged as a prominent collaborator. As I recall from reading about the Paul De Man scandal it was Henri who helped the young Paul to aquire positions at Belgian Nazi newspapers as a literary critic.
