Date: Mon, 26 Jan 1998 15:58:53 +1100 From: Rob Schaap <rws-AT-comserver.canberra.edu.au> Subject: M-TH: 'Football' and Wall St G'day Thaxists, Well, the Green Bay Packers (for whom I have an affection because they are the only publicly owned team in the competition, wear the green'n'gold of Australia, and whose fans are called 'cheeseheads' which I am by dint of my Dutch origins - and how can you make a more rational choice than that?) have just lost to Denver. I tried to watch but the bits between the good bits just take too long. Anyway, Robert Stovall's Super Bowl Predictor (even less rationally developed than my affection for the Packers, but boasting a 90% success rate) has it that Wall St is set for a big dip (the prediction being that an AFL victory denotes a dip and an NFL victory a surge). Doug's paperback should hit the streets in concert with a few suicidal dealers. I see one of Oz's big banks is copping a Moody's negative rating due to exposure to SK, Indonesia and Thailand. All this after assurances exposure was not an Oz problem. Unless this Asian business is one of the great stories of corporate collusion to domesticate the tigers and buy up cheap productive assets (I hear the rupiah is now worth less than 20% of what it was in October), the complex tendrils of indirect exposure might shortly be manifesting on Wall St too, eh? Cheers, Rob. ************************************************************************ Rob Schaap, Lecturer in Communication, University of Canberra, Australia.
