So Leo is one of the sorry crowd of left intellectuals who threw in his
Marxist lot with the Stalinists. He fell when they did.

Now in addition to the general stupidity of the position flaunted by Leo,
he mishandles the language too. Since "erstwhile" means "former, past",
it's obvious that he himself is the erstwhile Marxist (make that erstwhile
fake Marxist), while the butts (meaning target not behind) of his bad
English (and equally bad politics) are present Marxists (loosely so in
Carrol's case, but what the hell...).
