We do not live in a deterministic universe because the position and direction of its tiny particles - like electrons - cannot be determined simultaneously. When one is looking for non-determinism, why not go to the biggest universal source? If we have to deal with electrons from random neurons firing all the time, we have to "decide" how to cope with that phenomenon *internally* - because it comes about internally. That creates patterns of thought that are unique to individuals. That means both that individuals will react differently to stimuli that are universal among a group of individuals *and* that they will simultaneously be creating their own stimuli and their own causes of thought and action. This process of random patterns created by previous self-generated stimuli plus current self-generated stimuli gives force to uniqueness of though and action against a normative world (if the world is in fact normative). Dialectics, looked at from a certain angle, fit well into this scheme. They portray our world as *reacting" to constant change and trying to make the best system out of it, rather than following a particular path based on deterministic truths. peace --- from list marxism-thaxis-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
