Date: Mon, 16 Mar 1998 14:21:01 -0600 (CST) Hugh writes "This [Carrol on martyrs] is practically the same as the position held by Bob M on the issue of the Turkish hunger-strikers in prison, in the summer of 1996." Those hunger strikers were the expression of a mass political movement capable of using their activity for further political mobilization. My student just went quietly off to prison, while his friends spent their money on his legal defense. The Turkish hunger strikers come under my definition of "casualties" as opposed to "martyrs." They were not merely "bearing witness," they were struggling for concrete demands. The same was true of the IRA prisoners who went on hunger strike some years ago. In any case, I don't sit in Bloomington and tell people thousands of miles away in a separate culture how to build their revolution.
