Those hunger strikers were the expression of a mass political movement
capable of using their activity for further political mobilization. My
student just went quietly off to prison, while his friends spent their
money on his legal defense. The Turkish hunger strikers come under my
definition of "casualties" as opposed to "martyrs." They were not merely
"bearing witness," they were struggling for concrete demands. The same was
true of the IRA prisoners who went on hunger strike some years ago.

In any case, I don't sit in Bloomington and tell people thousands of miles
away in a separate culture how to build their revolution.
