Subject: M-TH: Political earthquake in France

Something's happening in France.

The socialist left is regrouping furiously (in non-Bolshevik, opportunist
fashion, but it's early days yet).

And the right is coming to pieces, as anyone who watched French TV
yesterday could see. The UDF (Giscard d'Estaing's crew) fell apart at the
touch of Le Pen's National Front. The others are writhing in agony as they
see the presidencies and pickings of the regions within their grasp but
only at the cost of alliances with the National Front. The NF is sneering
and smirking and boasting and generally full of itself. And they're all
coming to blows!

Quite a circus.

And would anyone like to claim that the working class and its mobilizations
are not right slap bang in the middle of all this?

To be continued...

Cheers,

Hugh
