"rerum" Carrol, This is from a few days ago, but with Hugh's translation of "mens rea" as "guilty mind" , in answer to your request for a definition of "reaL sex" , how about "guilty sex" ? Charles >>> Carrol Cox <cbcox-AT-rs6000.cmp.ilstu.edu> 03/31 9:41 AM >>> Charles writes to Hugh, "Lets see, "sunt" means, what?" they are", third person plural? "rerum" means "thing". Why don't you tell me what lacrimae means, tears?" Some days Hugh likes to combine his Trotskyism and his classicism. Bringing in his classic education by using this quotation is "no fair" by the rules of kids' games (which is what Hugh plays), because *res* (gen. plural *rerum*) is untranslatable in many contexts. Perhaps something like "Tears flow from the roots of the world" or in the immortal words of Jimmy Carter, "Life just ain't fair." More briefly, "Shit happens."
