Donna Jones,
I was sorry to see that Vernon Venable's account of historical
materialism excludes cultural analyses. Since that 1946 work, a number of
Marxist theorists, including Lukacs, Gramsci, and Althusser, have
acquired a importance because they make culture, ideology, and hegemony
essential components of social historical analyses. The new term
"historical formation" emphasizes the importance of cultural traditions,
ideological hegemony, for Marxist theory.
