Marx pinpoints labour as the transforming, shaping force through which 
workers are able to see the material changes wrought by their labour.  This 
is why the master needs the slave far more than the slave needs the master 
and this is why the centre for resistance to material exploitation lies with 
those who see the transforming power of their labour.  There's a quote from 
the Grundrisse that makes the point more clearly; I'll dig it out for you if 
you like.
