Subject: utopia & USSR

Re Chris Sciabarra's post on the utopia/dystopia of the Soviet Union: to
what extent were the Soviets really utopians? I thought the Bolsheviks
were very practical, even cynical, men in a lot of ways. The wild
fantasias of a Fourier were anathema to them. As to 'reform or
revolution,' it seems there was a good deal of continuity between Social
Democracy and Bolshevism, particularly in the use of a marxist
*ideology*. Interesting point, though, about the unforeseen consequences
of revolutionary upheavals. It makes you wonder, what would Marx have
made of *chaos theory*?
