Two different aspects reflect Lenin's contribution. His development or elaboration of the dialectical character of the relation between matter and consciousness, largely in his Marterialism and Empirio- Criticism, and the need for an ideologically cohesive Marxist party to give leadership to the development of a socialist consciousness through combining practical political activity wiht theoretical understanding. A good, recent discussion of the essence of Marxism-Leninism can be found in the book by the German Marxist philosopher Hans Heinz Holz available in Eng;o English under the title "The Downfall and Future of Socialism," published as a special issue of the journal "Nature, Society, and Thought," vol. 5, no. 3 (1992) available for $6.50 (included shipping--correction, including shipping) from NST, Univ. of Minnesota, 116 Church St. SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455-0112. The orginal German title is "Die Niederlage und Zukunft des Sozialismus" available from Marxistische Blaetter, Hoffnungstr. 18, Essen, Germany. ------------------
