Subject: gramsci

Anyone interested in Gramsci and particularly in a good critique of the
reception of Gramsci in revisionist Marxist and cultural studies contexts,
an essential essay to read is

Perry Anderson, "The Antinomies of Antonio Gramsci," _New Left Review_ 100
(1976-1977).

For Anderson, as for a number of socialists, revolution _is_ on the agenda.
He has an inspiring conclusion to that effect, one which really throws
water on the hegemony gang and the laclau and mouffe acolytes as well.

Contrary to Jon, I thik laclau and mouffe are an absolute departure from
the socialist tradition and socialist politics, and are a real dead end for
those of us who want to put socialist politics into practice.
Unfortunately, the reception and elaboration of gramsci has lead to a
similar -- though more recuperable -- dead end. Check out Anderson for
more on that.
