Someone wrote in an unnsigned message that Lacan's reliance on the Phallic
code places him in conflict with historical materialism because the
code is trans-historical.  While this is certainly a question within 
Lacanian psychoanalysis -- wther or not Lacan believed this -- it remains
that the phallic code is a material-historico reality indivisible from
either language or hiistory.  I don't see, therefore, the contradiction
between the two positions as outlined.
