Subject: Conference Announcement

Judith Jackson Fosset and Jeffrey Tucker have asked me to send word of a
graduate student conference that will be held at Princeton University on
March 3-4, 1995: "'The Negro Problem': 1895-1995."

Riffing off the opening of _The Souls of Black Folk_, where W.E.B. Du Bois
is confronted by the question, "How does it feel to be a problem?", this
conference seeks to discuss the significance of race, blackness, and
African-American culture in American society, as America leaves its first
century without the institution of chattel slavery and enters its first
century without legally codified segregation.

The keynote address, "Looking B(l)ackward: African-American Studies in
the Age of Identity Politics," will be delivered by Robin D.G. Kelley,
Professor of History at New York University, on Friday evening.

Panels include:

*Voices from the "Color Line"
*Specters of Race: Shadows at the Turn of the Century
*Remaking a Nation: Historicizing Black Consciousness
*A Portrait of the Artist as a Black Man
*The Politics of Sexuality
*Art in the Era of Lynching
*Reimagining Urban Space
*The Negro Question/The White Problem
*Beyond Welfare Queens and Wolfpacks
*Race Men and Race Women
*and more

The conference organizers invite those interested in these topics to
attend "The Negro Problem" graduate conference, which will take place on
Friday (noon to 6 pm) and Saturday (8 am to 6 pm), March 3-4, 1995, in
Robertson Hall, Woodrow Wilson School, Washington Road, Princeton, NJ.
The registration fee is $10; pre-registration is strongly encouraged.

possible. Thanks.
