Subject: Re: How do I access archives?

To see who else is on this list, send the message "who marxism" to
majordomo-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu. However, it would probably be most
helpful if posters could sign their posts with their name (or "handle")
and email address.

I have appended to this message the new guide to the archive.

Take care

Welcome to the marxism archive!

The archive is located somewhere in Virginia on a machine called
jefferson (don't ask). There are numerous ways to access this
archive and to make its contents useful. Here are some of those
ways:

----------------------------
a. ftp

type ftp jefferson.village.virginia.edu

When asked, type "anonymous" for login id and your full email address
for password (this latter is, I think, merely for the site's admin
purposes and may be optional...).

type cd pub/pubs/listservs/spoons/marxism.archive

Then type "ls" which will give you the list of the directories and
files that are on the archive. There are at present three
directories (marxism_1994, marxism_1995 and papers) and a couple of
other files--a list of left internet resources (interlef.doc) and a
file containing the current posts (current) and a "README" file
(this one).

To change to a directory, type cd directoryname (eg. cd marxism_1994).

In their directories, the archive files are mostly labelled in the
format marxism_Date.Yr, eg. "marxism_19Jul.94" (each of these
contains one week's worth of posts) or marxism_month.Yr (which
contain a month's worth), with the headers stripped to reduce
unnecessary information.

To find out which one you want, you may want to look at the index files
first, which are labelled marxism_Date.Yr.ind, and which merely contain
the subject headings for that week's posts or (for the monthly archives)
the files labelled marxism_Monthy.Yr.subj. To make things
confusing, some are also indexed as Marxism_Date.Yr.idx.

To receive any of these files, type "get filename"

then type "quit"

And this should do it.

You may be interested to know that these files can serve as mail folders--
and this may indeed be the easiest way to read them. Simply move them
into the directories mail or Mail (depending upon which program you use:
mail for pine and Mail for elm, for example) by typing the command

"mv filename mail" or "mv filename Mail"

and then go into whichever mail program you use, and go to the folder
which will have the same name as the filename.

--------
b. gopher

type gopher jefferson.village.virginia.edu

then choose the following directories consecutively:
Publications of the Institute/Discussion Lists/spoons/marxism.archive

You will then see the same directories and files as detailed above.

Here the files will not be seen as mail files, but as subdirectories,
within which each message can be accessed individually--this is
probably the easiest way to browse through the archive. Read the archive
on gopher or retrieve the individual messages through your gopher
software.

----------------
c. World Wide Web

In your WWW browser, choose the URL
http://jefferson.village.virginia.edu/~spoons

Then locate the archives (near the bottom of the page) and choose
marxism.archive. (You may also want to check out the marxism WWW
page while you're at it.)

As with gopher, here the files are easily browsable, and available as
individual messages.

Any questions, don't hesistate to ask.
