Subject: Racism


It seems to me that parts of the American labor movement have always used
appeals to racism or nativism as a rallying point, from the anti-immigrant
propaganda of Samuel Gompers and the AFL, to the union-organized opposition
to NAFTA. This is not to mention, of course, the appeals to some kind of
ethnic-based nationalism that many Third World communists have resorted to
-- obviously, those are a completely different phenomenon.  Rahul Mahajan
