Subject: Paul Cockshott's papers on the archive

I have just put two papers by Paul Cockshott (one of which is co-written
with Allin (?) Cottrell) on the archive.

They are in TeX format, which is readable as ascii, but not necessarily
easily so. Perhaps Paul can explain TeX briefly for those who want to
access these papers, and hopefully we can also get some plain text
versions up there.

I append our newly revised information sheet for the ftp site.

[By the way, Steve Keen, what's the official title of your thesis?]

Take care

Jon

	1859-1872"
Lawler, James. "Lenin and the Socialist Transition in Russia,"

Further suggestions or offers of what to put here would be welcome.
Someday soon we hope to html-ize them for more adequate WWW reading.

They are available via ftp, gopher and/or the WWW.

To access any of them, please follow these instructions:

i. via. FTP

To connect to the IATH, say

    ftp jefferson.village.virginia.edu

You will get some reply, and then be asked for your login ID.
Reply

    anonymous

You will be asked for a password, to which you should reply with
your complete e-mail address (I think they just want that for
bookkeeping purposes, and my guess is that it's optional).

You will get a lengthy "welcome" message followed by the ftp prompt,
which is "ftp>". Say

    cd pub/pubs/listservs/spoons/marxism.archive/papers

and then when it prompts you again, say

    ls -l

This will give you a list of all the files and their sizes. It
should be clear which is which. Say

    bin

to change to binary transfer mode (which is faster for all files
and necessary for compressed files). Then for each file you
want to transfer, say

    get file-name

which will transfer the file to your machine. This operation
may take a while, so be patient.

After each transfer is completed, you will get prompted again.
When you've gotten all the file you want, say

    quit

and you'll be out of ftp.

Sometimes connection is refused because the remote machine is too
busy. If this happens, try again at some other time.

ii. via gopher

type gopher jefferson.village.virginia.edu

then choose the following directories consecutively:
Publications of the Institute/Discussion Lists/spoons/marxism.archive/
papers

You can read the files through gopher, or use your gopher software to
transfer the files to your own account (mailing them to your email address
or downloading them).

iii. via World Wide Web

In your WWW browser, choose the URL
http://jefferson.village.virginia.edu/~spoons/mainmarx.html

Then locate the archives (near the bottom of the page) and choose
marxism.archive. Then choose the directory "papers" (effectively this will
get you into the gopher server).

Any questions, don't hesistate to ask.
