Lisa,

Baudelaire wrote an essay on Modernity around 1810???? In it,
modernity is defined (from memory) as two sided - the "fleeting and
ephemeral and the constant and stable" or something. It is quoted in
a book called "The Condition of Postmodernity" by David Harvey. He is
not a post modernist, but is a marxist. His purpose in this book is
to uncover the material basis of cultural change and to bunk the
postmodernists claims of a 'new change' and an end to
'metanarratives'. He doesn't do it comprehensively, but it is a good
start. I think it is worth a read if these are the issues you are
looking at.
