I don't know about Uncle Joe, but in the end of the movie as the ship comes
into the Murmansk harbor, hundreds of Russians come running down to the
docks yelling 'tovarich' (sp? what kind of stalinoid can't spell toravich?).

The sailors all turn to Humphrey Bogart and ask: What are they saying?
(clearly the guy who knows and has left leanings in the movie as he had in
real life)

Bogart: "They're saying tovarich, it means comrade, and that's good!"
