The biggest and most sustained improvement in living
standards in history (with the widest distribution of same) 
occurred during the *least* free market/libertarian stage of 
capitalism--roughly from the Second World War until the early 
1970s.  Since the abandonment of social democratic polices in 
the mid to late 70s, living standards and real wages have fallen,
while unemployment, poverty, and inequality have grown steadily.
This is true of both First and Third World countries.  

Coincidence?  I don't THINK so, Brian.
