Malthus was a lackey of the gentry, and took a great deal for granted. Space
contains humans. Migration does not enter into the picture.  People don't
move through space, they are contained by it. 

Malthus came to his population theory by way of Townsend's theorem of the
goats and the dogs. On an island off the coast of Chile, a Robinson Curosoe
character lands a few goats to provide food for future visits. (Polanyi, The
Great Transformation.)

What results is a population explosion. 

There is no way off the island. 

Re- the Irish Question - 

Potatoes came from Peru. 

The Irish migrated en masse to the Americas.
