Subject: American fascism
Reading all the ink spilled over Buchanan's fascism - or fascism lite, as
Joe Conason puts it in the current New York Observer - makes me wonder why
none of the folks who write this stuff ever ask why such figures arise in
American politics or why they attract mass support. Usually, the subtext is
"the white American masses are stupid, untrustworthy, and bigoted, and
thank god for the ACLU." That's not much of a political analysis. Can we do
any better?
