Subject: political novels

Could anyone recommend some good "political" novels? I'm looking for
something to recommend to fellow students that we could use on a
comparative lit project, something that would give us an inside look (an
ethnography) at a given society.

I'm looking for something that's well written, not didactic, but that shows
working class people or communists as they live and deal with life, that
shows us their world from the inside. I'd especially like something that
involves literacy or education in the story...but the main requirement is
that it be a good read, and that it be in English, and that it be fairly
available in the US.

I haven't read much fiction in recent years, and I've never read much
political fiction, so I need help. The recent discussions about 1984, etc.
made me feel there are some on this list who might help

Thanks

Pete Farruggio
