    William Empson (who was personally acquainted with Orwell) claimed that
Orwell's primary target in *1984* was neither Stalin nor Hitler but
Christianity. I have no opinion: the novel bored me. It was just another
of those tracts that assume human perfection (in this cased perfection
in "evil").
