Subject: Political Novels

I would think that Atwood's book is a good choice. She is a first rate
novelist and gives a feminist view of a possible future run by the
family values, God centred family, crowd. GRAPES OF WRATH by John Steinbeck
has always seemed to me a good picture of the plight of migrant workers during
the depression. I don't know if anyone mentioned Fahrenheit something or other
--the temperature at which books burn- by Bradbury I think. This is another
"good" dystopia novel. It is sometimes used in high schools here. Dos Passos
USA is worth a look as well. An interesting novel of experiences in ultra-
left groups way back when is Earl Birnie's DOWN THE LONG TABLE. (Although
Birnie is a Canadian (mostly a poet) part of the novel is set in the US.)
  Cheers, Ken Hanly
