Some of the best fiction I've read recently about the working class comes from
South American women writers. If I had to pick one it would be The Hour of
the Star, by Clarice Lispector. Macabea, the anti-heroine, is a hopelessly
poor and barely literate working girl from rural Brazil, transplanted to Sao
Paulo where she labors away. All of Lispector's work, which blends modernist
and traditional elements of religion, reflection and anecdote, have now been
translated into English.
