Pete, no doubt Le Guin's book is a wonderful one. It presents a map which
includes capitalism pseudo-socialism, third world realities, and a
counterfactual anarchist experiment. It is very rich in metaphores and
sources of debate. Also, it includes an special sensibility for problems of
daily subjectivity under several systems (sex, friendship, knowledge,
hierarchies, etc.).
Another good text, I think is Samuel Beckett's "El despoblador" (in
English, would be something like "The despoblator", I don't know -I have a
translation from the French -"Le depeupler"-), for it shows very well the
feeling of no-time that exists in our societies and its scientifical
language. Another one: Wiliam Golding's "Lord of Flies", is also a good
source for start debates. And, of course, why not something of John Dos
Passos?. You may also work with the movie "Riff Raff".

"KM> Try _The Dispossesed_ by Ursula LeGuin. It's sci-fi, but well worth it.
