There is a *very* large literature on these topics from a Marxist 
perspective. 

For edited readers, I would recommend:

* Anne M. Bailey and Josep R. Llobera ed. _The Asiatic Mode of Production: 
Science and Politics_, London, Routledge and Kegan Paul, 1981

and for those who can read Spanish:

* Roger Batra ed. _El modo de produccion asiatico: Problemas de la 
historia de los paises coloniales, 3rd ed., Mexico, Editions Era, 1975

Less recommended, but useful, is:

* Stephen P. Dunn _The Fall and Rise of the Asiatic Mode of Production_, 
London, Routledge and Kegan Paul, 1982 (concentrates on Soviet thought; 
has the advantage of being short).
