Dear Brad,

here some information from Germany:

4,3 Millionen Menschen ohne Arbeit - der hoechste Stand der
Arbeitslosigkeit seit dem Ende des Krieges. Arbeitslosenquote 11,1
Prozent. 
Im Westen: 9,6 Prozent Arbeitslose. 
Im Osten (frueher DDR): 17,5 Prozent Arbeitslose.

In German we say, the Governement is not fighting against the
unemployment; they fight against the poor. The crisis go on, that's
the old and that's the new message. 
The most of our trade union leadership make ,Buendnis fuer Arbeit", 
they surrender without fighting (that's the difference to France). 

The new volume of ,Sozialismus" (3/96) contains more details e.g.
